OUR
1987
We met as total strangers, and sudden roommates on the 3rd floor of University of Delaware’s Russell Hall dorm. One of us wanted to be a writer, the other a graphic designer.
We’d go on to live together for 4 years, from dorms to apartments to a house, all the while sharing too much fun, one small space, one dresser, one closet…and one dream; to utilize our talents in our chosen careers.
As it turns out, we were lucky enough to do that. While we both took detours to raise our families, we also steadily worked on our crafts and in our fields. Luckily, we often had opportunities to work together on projects ranging from an alumni magazine for a law school to promotional videos for a consulting firm, to brochures, website design and copy. Nearly 30 years after we graduated from college, we separately both stumbled into the field of college admissions and consulting…which led us straight to this place and time.
As we simultaneously help high school students toward their college dreams, we’ve encountered so many bright, ambitious, creative young people. They love to paint, draw, illustrate, take photos, and express themselves through writing essays, stories, and poetry. This generation is simply bursting with creativity, sparks of inspiration, and wells of emotional depth. We see their creative energy is not only a source of ambition, but also a haven from the onslaught of mental health issues that are troubling this generation like none before it.
And right into the heart of these creative spirits comes a dagger in the form of Artificial Intelligence. As creative people who’ve been able to make careers following our passions, we find the capabilities of AI to be troubling, if not horrifying. Worse, we are watching as an entire generation of young people are being told by some of the most powerful corporations on the planet – “your gifts are not needed anymore.”
Beyond all the fears that society has about the power of AI, one of our greatest fears is that future generations of creative people will be silenced. Not only is that crushing for the ambitions of this generation of creatives, but incredibly detrimental to young people who find solace in their poetry, joy in their drawings, and peace behind the lens of a camera.
2025
So, we created Gen C Media.
Our goal is to provide a space for high school students to share their creative projects in writing, fine art, and photography. Our message is . . . your creative gifts have value. Our mission is to encourage and showcase the authentic, human creative spirit that is more vital than ever.
Gen C Media is a celebration of not only the results of a creative endeavor, but the process of creating itself. Yes, a computer can write a letter to your daughter’s teacher for her, while also robbing your daughter of the opportunity to struggle and then find the right words, HER WORDS to express how she feels.
At Gen C Media we believe that creativity matters.
Authenticity matters.
Effort matters.
Your gifts…matter.
Let us help you share them with the world.
